How do I protect my car in winter? 5 tips and tricks

Winter Car Wash Ice Scraper Defroster De-icer Fogged Iced Frozen Antifreeze

5 tips for a worry-free winter drive that you've guaranteed never heard before!

The engine starts reluctantly, the windows are fogged or iced over, the paintwork is covered in mud and road salt... The cold season really takes its toll on our beloved car. The good news: you have it in your hands how well your car gets through the cold season.

Car care is not just for summer. On the contrary, winter is particularly harsh on your beloved car. Even if it's not the most comfortable season and car washing in snow and rain seems pointless at first glance. After just a few kilometers on a road covered in slush and salt, your car is dirty again. But does that mean you shouldn't wash your car in winter? That's a big mistake! Without care & protection, our car is helplessly exposed to winter.

1. What to do with iced-up windows?

Ice scraping: One of the most annoying tasks after a cold winter night. Your hands freeze and you only make slow progress. We'll tell you how to clear your windows in seconds.

The quickest, most convenient, and gentlest way to free your windows from ice is with a windshield defroster. You simply spray the product on and the ice melts from your windows, mirrors, and headlights. To remove the thawed ice, you can use an ice scraper glove with a water-repellent nylon surface. This allows you to push the melted mass off the windows without pressure and protect your hands from moisture and cold. Tip: The de-icer spray can also be used on a frozen car lock, on the side mirrors or on the rear window. The window de-icer not only melts the ice but also prevents the windows from re-freezing.

Tip: Regular window cleaning and sealing helps prevent the window from icing up too quickly.

Windshield antifreeze ensures that the windshield washer fluid in the windshield washer system does not freeze even at extreme temperatures down to -60°C. It is gentle on paint, rubber, and plastic.

2. How to prevent your door seals from freezing

Has this ever happened to you: You want to get into your car in the morning, but the doors are frozen shut and difficult to open?

But how did that happen? If water collects in the area of the door and trunk seals and temperatures fall below 0, the accumulated water freezes into ice. The door seal connects with the frame's seal and can no longer be opened. If you try to open the doors forcefully now, a tear in the rubber is inevitable.

To prevent this from happening in the first place, we recommend regularly treating the rubber with a special rubber care product. A rubber care stick prevents the rubber from becoming porous. Before application, you should clean the seals with a microfiber cloth. Then, run the rubber care product several times over the rubber seals on the trunk, doors, and hood.

It is important to care for the rubber not only in winter but throughout the year. This keeps the rubber supple. A refresh is necessary if you press your fingertips on the rubber and feel that it feels hard or brittle.

3. Apply paint protection

Moisture, cold, and road salt are a harmful combination for your car and severely attack the paint. Salt traces and grit residue should be removed from the paint as quickly as possible before they cause damage. When the salt crystals become moist, they develop a corrosive property that can harm your paint.

After a thorough car wash, you should apply a sealant. This protects your car paint from weather influences. You spread the sealant with a microfiber cloth and ideally leave the car to dry for a few hours. The wax layer is water and dirt repellent, so salt and dirt do not stick to the bodywork as easily. The beading effect is still visible after three harsh winter months.

4. The windshield wiper trick!

Driving on a country road or highway in the rain without turning on the windshield wipers would be crazy! The raindrops falling on the windshield obstruct our vision – until we turn on the wipers. That's how we've done it since we learned to drive.

But what if the rain would just bead off immediately and you wouldn't even need the windshield wipers? The solution: window sealing! A window sealant replaces the windshield wiper, which is why it's also called an invisible windshield wiper. The water-repellent effect ensures that raindrops bead off the window at speeds above 65 km/h.

This not only extends the life of your windshield wipers but also ensures you reach your destination safely in any bad weather. The sealant also ensures that dirt and ice are less likely to stick to the windows. The window sealant can be applied to all windows – driver's, passenger's, rear, and windshield. This guarantees good all-round visibility on every journey.

5. No more foggy windows!

One of the main causes of accidents during the cold season is limited visibility. Fogged windows not only increase the risk of accidents but are also extremely annoying.

But why do the windows fog up from the inside? Cold air can hold less moisture. Since the windows are cold, the moisture from the air condenses and the car windows fog up from the inside.

What helps immediately:

  1. Open windows slightly so that humidity can escape
  2. Turn on ventilation/AC
  3. Anti-fog sponge

For a long-term solution, we recommend using an anti-fog spray. An anti-fog spray prevents the moisture you exhale from sticking to the interior car windows. This ensures clear all-round visibility throughout the cold season. Another trick is to spray windshield de-icer onto a microfiber cloth and use it to wipe the inside of the windows.
